SANTA CLARA, Calif.
— The Education Department said Wednesday that it will impose tougher restrictions on colleges and universities that fail to enforce campus sexual harassment policies.
The Department of Education on Wednesday also ordered colleges and university officials to require that their staff members report suspected sexual assault and harassment to authorities if they receive a complaint.
The department’s decision follows an April decision by the Supreme Court that it did not have the authority to enforce the campus sexual misconduct policies.
The ruling is expected to be heard by the full U.S. Supreme Court later this month.
