“It is with great pride and excitement that we welcome the leader of the most important conservative movement of our time, Ben Shapiro, to address our annual gathering of the nation’s most respected educators,” AAUT President Bill Schaeffer said in a statement.
“He is one of the few voices who has made it clear that the real agenda of our schools, our communities and our nation is not only about academic rigor and critical thinking, it is also about creating a more inclusive America, one that fosters a sense of belonging and belongingness.”
Shapiro, who previously founded the far-right website The Daily Stormer, was one of Trump’s top backers in the presidential campaign.
He helped Trump win the Republican nomination and was one the few prominent figures to oppose the candidate’s candidacy.
He is also the author of the book “The Truth About Islam: How to Talk to Your Muslim Family,” which argued that Islam is not a religion and that Muslims are not inherently violent.
Shapir has also criticized the Obama administration for its handling of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), a group that has killed more than 3,000 Americans and has used social media to recruit new fighters.
The conference is being held at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which hosted Trump during the 2016 election.
